社群開發模式「 The Apache Way 」

OpenOffice 基本系統最初是在 1990 年代由 Star Division 開發，分別在 1999 年和 2010 年被昇陽電腦和甲骨文公司購併，並在 2010 年中轉移給 Apache 軟體基金會。

目前團隊由開發者、測試者、翻譯者等各種志工組成，透過俗稱為「 The Apache Way 」的流程運作，並有來自全球上百位的開放源始碼志工共同支援。

The Document Foundation announces LibreOffice 3.5.3

Berlin, May 2, 2012 – The Document Foundation announces LibreOffice 3.5.3, the fourth version of the 3.5 family. LibreOffice 3.5.3 provides additional stability to corporate and individual users of the best free office suite ever.

In April 2012, 34 new developers contributed code to The Document Foundation, the largest number since January 2011 [Source: http://www.ohloh.net]. Eight of them have already committed more than once, thanks to the help of an extremely welcoming community, where old developers spend a portion of their time mentoring new ones to bring them up to speed, comments Norbert Thiebaud, a volunteer developer active since September 28, 2010. In less than two years, we have been able to build an authentically diverse community, where full time and volunteer developers coexist and help each other, as it should happen in every free software project.

Ten of the new developers are Google Summer of Code 2012 students, who will work at developing the following features:

• Calc performance improvements;

• Lightproof improvements;

• collaborative spreadsheet editing using Telepathy;

• a Microsoft Publisher import filter;

• a signed PDF export;

• a smartphone remote control;

• a new UI for picking templates;

• a Java based GUI for an Android viewer;

• an improved Impress SVG export filter;

• tooling for more and better tests.

Berlin, March 15, 2012 – The Document Foundation announces LibreOffice 3.5.1, the second version of the 3.5 family, targeting private individuals and enterprises. LibreOffice 3.5.1 fixes the majority of the most-important bugs identified by users and is expected to be appealing for most enterprises.

TDF encourages large organizations to deploy LibreOffice in conjunction with a support partner, who can assess specific requirements, help manage migration and provide bespoke fixes for identified issues. Purchasing LibreOffice support from a TDF partner provides enterprises with an indirect means to contribute financially to the project, to fund software development, to improve the stability and accelerate the growth.

“During the last month, the number of TDF hackers has overtaken the threshold of 400 code developers, with a large majority of independent volunteers and several companies paying full time hackers. In any case, the project is independent, as none of these companies employs more than 7% of the developers”, affirms Italo Vignoli, member of the Board of Directors. “Since September 2010, a monthly average of 20 new hackers has joined the project, attracted by the copyleft license, the lack of copyright assignment and a welcoming environment”.

1. 我沒有被「通過審核」，我是直接加入的。我加入的時候PMC正在成形中，沒有 上級單位可以審核。

    

2. 我只是舉例中文問題時，提到有「字形破裂」的問題，並沒有說修好了。修好 的只有字數。

3. 「開發團隊也進行了OpenOffice文件的中文翻譯工作」，我受訪當時說的是中 文團隊，指的是Mouettee、凱如、Eric你們。 ^^;

4. 「4.0介面將採用類似Ribbon設計」，我受訪當時是說「4.0將像Ribbon、 iWorks一樣有漂亮的介面」。4.0的界面不會像Ribbon。想預覽4.0的漂亮使用界 面，請參照IBM Lotus Symphony 3.0.1。

OpenOffice核心開發團隊首度有臺灣人

OpenOffice出現首位加入核心開發團隊的臺灣人，即將推出的3.4新版已解決多年來正體中文的使用問題，未來也能加速修正正體中文使用問題

去年6月Apache基金會從甲骨文接手OpenOffice後，正式將OpenOffice更名為Apache OpenOffice，並成立專門委員會負責OpenOffice的後續軟體開發與維護工作，臺灣開源社群開發者楊士青已通過審核進入成為該委員會成員之一，這是首次有正體中文開發者進入OpenOffice核心開發團隊。

楊士青表示，未來正體中文問題將更容易獲得改善，Apache OpenOffice 3.4新版已特別修正中文使用問題，包含字形破裂以及字數計算錯誤等問題，Apache預計數月內正式釋出3.4版。

OpenOffice是一套開源的辦公室軟體，由昇陽（Sun Microsystems）在1999年自一家德國公司StarDivision買下， 2002年推出OpenOffice 1.0版，一直到昇陽被甲骨文併購之前，OpenOffice的開發工作仍持續由StarDivision負責，並歷經多次改版，直到OpenOffice 3.2版。目前可供下載的最新版本為甲骨文接手期間唯一釋出的OpenOffice 3.3版。

核心開發團隊首次加入正體中文開發者

雖然OpenOffice是屬於開源軟體，全球社群可以透過網路將所發現的問題提供給開發者。不過，楊士青表示，開源社群成員真正能參與OpenOffice正式版本的開發工作，是直到Apache基金會成立專責委員會之後。他指出，過去昇陽允許StarDivision擁有相當大的獨立性，再加上StarDivision不是以開源起家的公司，開發流程並不傾向開放，「導致外界對於OpenOffice的開發工作一直有不得其門而入的感覺，因此，許多老舊的程式問題也一直沒有修正。」楊士青說。

這個問題在中文使用上更為明顯，比如說，中文字形在不同系統環境下開啟時，時常出現不支援的情況，也就是俗稱的「字破掉」，以及中文字數統計錯誤等問題，這些OpenOffice早就存在的問題都遲遲未獲解決。在首次有正體中文開發者進入核心開發團隊後，楊士青表示，除了這些問題將在3.4版解決之外，開發團隊也進行了 OpenOffice文件的中文翻譯工作，補足四千多條未譯條目，將更有利於未來中文使用者使用。

4.0介面將採用類似Ribbon設計

OpenOffice還有另一個轉變就是IBM在1月底時也宣布將所擁有的免費辦公室軟體Lotus Symphony 3.0.1捐給OpenOffice交由Apache基金會接手，其中包括他們從2007年以後所投入在該軟體的開發、管理、行銷人力。

這代表IBM提供的資源將大大影響OpenOffice未來發展，楊士青表示，最大的改變是使用者介面將更活潑，類似Ribbon、iWorks使用介面的視覺化效果出現，最快在OpenOffice 4.0就會實現這些功能，但4.0版預計要到2013年以後才會正式釋出。

另外，隨著OpenOffice轉到Apache基金會，授權方式也從原先的LGPL 轉換成Apache授權模式，兩者之間並不相容，使得OpenOffice有許多過去採用 LGPL授權的程式碼都必須以Apache授權或相容於Apache授權的授權方式釋出的程式碼重新撰寫，楊士青表示，3.4版的原始碼將大幅改變，但原先具有的功能並不會有差別。文⊙辜雅蕾

在眾人的努力之下， Apache OpenOffice 過幾個月即將釋出。這段期間 Apache OpenOffice Project Management Committee 不斷努力，將 GPL 的 OpenOffice.org 改寫為 Apache License 的 Apache OpenOffice 。這部份的工作已經完工，開發程式碼也已經上線。目前大家正在努力做 3.4 版釋出前的結案工作，務求在最短時間內，呈現一個全新又讓大家滿意的 Apache OpenOffice 3.4 。

在正式釋出前，我們先來搶先看看， Apache OpenOffice 3.4 版有哪些新的改變。

1. OpenOffice.org 正式改名為 Apache OpenOffice ： OpenOffice.org 去年四月由 Oracle 轉移給 Apache 軟體基金會管理， 3.4 版是由 Apache 軟體基金會管理下的第一個釋出版本。我們討論過後，決定去掉茸長的 .org ，以 Apache OpenOffice 新名釋出。
改名也宣告一個新生命的開始。過去十年來， OpenOffice.org 受到許多人的支持，在商業辦公教育方面，擁有非常廣泛的應用。謝謝大家過去十年來對 OpenOffice.org 的支持，也希望大家支持新生的 Apache OpenOffice 。
2. 中文翻譯更新：去年四月在中文團隊不眠不休的努力之下，翻整了 OpenOffice.org 的翻譯，除了補足四千多條未譯條目，更依一般辦公室軟體中文約定成俗用法、第一線推廣者的推廣經驗等，全面翻新舊有的翻譯。如今這些翻譯即將在 Apache OpenOffice 3.4 上釋出。在釋出前還會有最後的翻譯校正，也請大家一起來協助，讓 Apache OpenOffice 的中文更好。
3. 中文字數修正：字數，是辦公室軟體的商業關鍵應用。翻譯、出版業的稿酬計算，甚至是學校學生作業等，均需依賴正確的字數計算。過往 OpenOffice.org 團隊因沒有亞洲語系的開發人力，字數問題長期無解。 Apache OpenOffice 在中文開發人力的加入後，已經修正了中文字數問題了。
4. Data Pilot 資料助理改名 Pivot Table 樞鈕分析表：微軟 Excel 的樞鈕分析表，在 OpenOffice.org Calc 下叫做資料助理，讓很多第一線的推廣者、使用者深感困擾。這個問題在 3.4 版後已解決， OpenOffice.org Calc 的資料助理 Data Pilot 中英文，均改名為樞鈕分析表 Pivot Table 。
5. 支援 SVG 向量圖檔：不管在 Writer 、 Calc 、 Impress 、 Draw ，讓你的專業美術版面設計，更能發揮得淋漓盡至。
6. Impress 頁面配置簡化。
7. 支援 ODF 1.2 版開放文件格式。
8. Apache OpenOffice 的開放原始碼版權，由 GPL 變更為 Apache License ：變更為 Apache License 意味著全面翻新的程式碼，及更多的自由，希望全新的程式碼和授權，能夠帶來更穩定的版本、更公開的參與、更廣泛的應用。

LibreOffice 3.5釋出（有點lag了，不好意思 ^^; ）

The Document Foundation announces LibreOffice 3.5: “the best free office suite ever”

Berlin, February 14, 2012 – The Document Foundation announces LibreOffice 3.5, the third major release of “the best free office suite ever”, which shows to end users the improvements derived from the development strategy adopted since September 2010. LibreOffice 3.5 derives from the combined effort of full time hackers – the largest group of experienced OOo code developers – and volunteer hackers, coordinated by the Engineering Steering Committee.

During 16 months, an average of 80 developers each month have provided a total of over thirty thousand code commits, introducing new and interesting features:

• Writer
  • a new built-in Grammar checker for English and several other languages
  • improved typographical features, for professional looking documents
  • an interactive word count window, which updates in real time
  • a new header, footer and page break user interface
• Impress / Draw
  • an improved importer of custom shapes and Smart Art from PPT/PPTX
  • a feature for embedding multimedia/colour palettes into ODF documents
  • a new display switch for the presenter’s console
  • new line ends for improved diagrams
  • Microsoft Visio import filter
• Calc
  • support for up to 10,000 sheets
  • a new multi-line input area
  • new Calc functions conforming to the ODF OpenFormula specifications
  • better performances when importing files from other office suites
  • multiple selections in autofilter
  • unlimited number of rules for conditional formatting
• Base
  • a new integrated PostgreSQL native driver

In addition, for the first time in the history of LibreOffice, we will be enabling the online update checker, which informs users when a new version of the suite is available.

“We inherited a 15 years old code base, where features were not implemented and bugs were not solved in order to avoid creating problems, and this – with time – was the origin of a large technical debt,” says Caolán McNamara, a senior RedHat developer who is one of the founders and directors of TDF. “We had two options: a conservative strategy, which would immediately please all users, leaving the code basically unchanged, and our more aggressive feature development and code renovation path, which has created some stability problems in the short term but is rapidly leading to a completely new and substantially improved free office suite: LibreOffice 3.5, the best free office suite ever.”

“In sixteen months, we have achieved incredible results – comments Michael Meeks, a SUSE Distinguished Engineer, who is also a founder and director at TDF – with nearly three hundred entirely new developers to the project, attracted by the copyleft license, the lack of copyright assignment and a welcoming environment. In addition to the visible features, they’ve translated tens of thousands of German comments, removed thousands of unused or obsolete methods – sometimes whole libraries – and grown a suite of automated tests. Although we still have a long way to go, users – who have sometimes complained for the stability of the software, as they were not aware of the technical debt we were fighting with – can now benefit from a substantially cleaner, leaner and more feature rich LibreOffice 3.5.”

LibreOffice 3.5 is the first release where the contribution of local communities and associations, such as ALTA in Brazil, has been acknowledged. In addition, TDF tried to recognize those volunteers – where we could easily identify them – who put so much into the 3.5 release, with a “hacking” or “bug hunting” hero badge presented the same day of the announcement. TDF is encouraging the development of a global, open and diverse ecosystem where companies, associations, local communities and volunteers share the common objective of developing the best free office suite ever.

The Document Foundation invites power users to install LibreOffice 3.5, and more conservative users to stick with LibreOffice 3.4 branch. Corporate users are strongly advised to deploy LibreOffice with the backing of professional support, from a company able to assist with migration, end user training, support and maintenance. The Document Foundation will soon provide a list of certified organizations providing these professional services.

Intel becomes a Member of TDF Advisory Board

Berlin, February 23rd, 2012 – The Document Foundation (TDF) today announced LibreOffice for Windows from SUSE is now available in the Intel AppUpSM Center, an online repository designed for Intel® processor-based devices. Intel is also becoming a member of TDF Advisory Board, a body that provides advice and funding for the LibreOffice project.

LibreOffice for Windows from SUSE is available in Intel AppUp Center as a special, five-language version featuring English, German, French, Spanish and Italian. As a validated Intel AppUpSM Center app, LibreOffice for Windows from SUSE features a new, smooth, silent installation flow and improved uninstallation cleanup.

“I have been using LibreOffice from day one for presentations at conferences and for data analysis,” said Dawn Foster, open source community lead, Intel. “Our engineers have worked with the LibreOffice codebase to optimise it for Intel hardware. Adding it to the AppUpSM Center is an obvious extension, and will provide an exciting feature for all Ultrabook users.”
