You don't need to learn many commands if you don't want. Ubuntu, Fedora, SuSE, they all come with nice GUIs. But commands are often faster and more powerful.
The same applies to OO: You can move the mouse up to "Edit" and then down to "Find & Replace" - or you just press Ctrl-F. The keyboard is faster...

As I said, I'm using Gentoo on my desktops (and on our school's servers). I can read Chinese just fine (font settings) and 有時候甚至可能寫中文。But I keep my desktop itself in English, that's easier.

No, they go mainly for Windows users:
People who don't want to know why it works use Mac OS.
People who want to know why it works use Linux.
People who don't want to know why it doesn't work use Windows.
OS X is nice and convenient, but I have more freedom on Linux. Really bad that OO is not yet available as native OS X application. I still have to use NeoOffice (a bit slow due to Java) on the Mac.

Yes, it's easier, especially in the beginning. But no matter what you use, you have to learn. Microsoft's marketing has made many people think that computers are soooo easy, especially with Windows. Just move the mouse, click here, click there and everything (in theory) works.
That lead to many people thinking "everyone is using a computer, so I too must use a computer". However, I don't want to learn. Computers are easy. Windows is easy. I don't need to learn, that's too complicated. I only want to use the computer.
Bang - computer infected or hijacked...
I'm teaching text processing and I use OpenOffice for that. But there are always two things most students don't really understand:
1) I'm teaching "text processing", not "OpenOffice". OO is just a tool we use for text processing. I use it for a number of valid reasons, but I could also use a lot of other programs.
2) Many students think: Why do I need to learn all this? I "can" Word! I can click on the icons and things happen! Isn't that enough? What settings? And what styles? I just click on that "B" and the text is bold, why bother learning more?
So, the mouse is pretty convenient in the beginning, but if you want to do "real stuff", you need to use the keyboard - even on Windows. (Windows console administration can be pretty powerful...)
